Eucharistic Ministers

Procedures for Eucharistic Ministers

All Eucharist Ministers should show the greatest reverence for the Most Holy Eucharist by their demeanor, attire and their willingness to serve. Please arrive early. This gives you enough time to prepare in the manner explained below, welcome people as they enter the church, and reverently participate in Mass when it begins. Please note that if you cannot serve at the assigned time: find another minister to substitute; inform the Mass Captain of the substitution; and advise the Mass Captain if you cannot find a substitute.

BEFORE THE MASS BEGINS:

1.   Check in with the Mass captain 20 minutes prior to the start of Mass.   Ensure that you sign in on the roster in the vestibule as a bread or cup minister, according to the pre-assigned schedule.

2.   Wear your appropriate nametag.  (Let Sister Marilyn know if you do not have one)

3.   Please note that the Mass Captain may replace you if you are not signed in 10 minutes before the Mass begins. Every effort will be made to be sensitive to family schedules, parking conditions, and the hosts of other demands. Please however arrive as early as you can.

4.   For your information, if the deacon is participating in this Mass he will always be assigned Cup #1.

5.   If you are assigned to more than one ministry for the Mass, please inform the Mass Captain.

6.   Please do not congregate at the minister’s sign in area.

THE ENTRANCE PROCESSION:

1.   Normally, Eucharistic Ministers will be seated in the assembly when Mass begins, unless assigned to an additional ministry.

THE MASS (Liturgy of Eucharist)

1.   All Eucharistic Ministers come forward promptly during the Exchange of the sign of Peace.

2.   All ministers clean hands with Purell at the side table before moving to the East transept.

3.    Bread #3, the Mass Captain, will get the ciborium, place it on the altar, get the key to the tabernacle, genuflect after opening, and bring ciborium to the altar and open it. Then return to the transept and join the other Eucharistic ministers.

4.   Presider/Deacon will divide the hosts into the ciboria.

5.   All Eucharistic Ministers line up in east transept (By the ambo)facing the side of the altar while the celebrant prepares to consume the Eucharist

6.   After the presider consumes the consecrated host, all the Eucharistic Ministers follow the Mass Captain up onto the altar area. Cup #2 and Cup #1 stand on the east end (near the ambo, but closer to the altar). (If Cup #1 is a Deacon, he will already be on the altar.) Bread #1 will stand at the far (west or font) end. All bread ministers should position themselves next to Bread #3. Likewise, cup ministers should position themselves near Cup #1.

7.   Presider will give consecrated bread to Cups #1 and #2 first. Then returns to the altar and gives them the consecrated wine respectively, along with a purificator. Cup #1 and #2 will step back slightly to create more room for the distribution of the cup to the other ministers.

8.   Presider will next proceed to give consecrated bread to the remaining Eucharistic ministers.  After each has received the consecrated bread, they in turn will receive the cup from either Cup #1 or Cup #2.  Each minister is expected to go to the Cup minister to receive or to get a blessing and then return in a counter-clockwise circle to their position and wait to be given their respective vessel. This will help a smooth flow for reception of Communion by the ministers.

9.   When the presider has completed distributing consecrated bread to the ministers, he positions himself at the altar to hand each their vessel.

a.    The normal sequence will be 2 Breads, then 2 Cups.

10.  When everyone has received their vessels, they will wait behind the altar while Father gives communion to the people with special needs. When he has finished, all will move to their respective stations when the Mass Captain moves to go into position.

a.    Bread Ministers will say to each communicant, “The Body of Christ”

b.    Cup Ministers will say to each communicant “The Blood of Christ”.

c.    The Mass Captain will ensure that the Cantor and Accompanist have received Eucharist. (Probably Bread #4 and Cup #4)

THE MASS (Purification)

1.   After Eucharist has been distributed, all Bread ministers return to the altar for the consolidation. Bread #3 will assist in consolidation as needed.

2.      Bread #3 will return the consecrated Bread to the Tabernacle.

3.      Meanwhile, all the cups will be returned to the side table.  Cup #1 will ensure that:

a.    All the remaining consecrated wine is reverently consumed and a purificator is placed over the top of each glass. All cups will be emptied. Do not put purificators into the cups.

c.    Cup#1 will notify the mass captain if any wine cannot be consumed.

THE RECESSIONAL:

1.      After recessional, all ministers will go back to the sacristy and check with the Mass Captain to ensure that all the purification is completed and that the vessels are prepared for the next Mass.

 2.      Leave your nametags.  (Be sure to remember to get a sub if you are not able to serve.)

 3.      Thank you for your continued gift to the community by being a minister of the Eucharist. We are blessed because of the time you give to our community in serving.
