About the Music
MinistryOur
Lady of the Lake music programs offer opportunities to expand your worship, grow
in spirituality and musical ability, and participate in wonderful fellowship.
Our Lady of the Lake’s Music Director, Tom
Carawan, oversees the parish’s music ministry of the many different talents of
all ages from each Music Ministry group. The Parish Accompanist is Lynne Huston.
Choir
The choir provides music
leadership at the Sunday Masses. During Easter Triduum and Holy Week the Choir
and cantors are at each day’s liturgy. There are two retreat/workshops annually
to prepare for the major seasons of the year. This year we attend the
Archdiocesan Music Retreat at the University of Portland with composers
Christopher Walker and Michael Joncas on October 5 & 6. February 2 & 3 is the
‘Easter Camp’ preparing for Lent and Easter.
The choir leads the music at the 11 AM Mass
on Sundays, This group of sopranos, altos, tenors, and basses sings traditional
and contemporary church music in four parts. Some are experienced readers and
others are new at singing with a music group. Rehearsals are weekly on
Wednesdays at 7:00 PM in the Church.

Cantors
The Cantor supports the assembly and
leads the songs and psalms. There is a cantor at every Mass on Sundays and holy
days. Sacramental liturgies, weddings, and funerals are led by cantors.
Cantors meet once monthly on second Thursdays at 7 PM in the Church. Regular
lessons with the music director and practices with the parish accompanist help
cantors prepare for liturgies.

Youth and Young Adults
Musicians for Life is the new name
for the youth musicians. They lead the music at the 6 PM Sunday
Life Teen Youth Mass. We rehearse
on Sundays at 4 PM in the Church. Guitars, percussion, and wind players make up
the instrumental musicians in the group. Our teen singers are women, but we
welcome any young men to come and sing. Jerry Wheeler is the Lead cantor.
We
began the new school year with a retreat before the
Life Teen Kick-off Mass. We are
planning two other events to help prepare for Advent– Christmas, and
Lent–Easter.
Music for the
Life Teen Masses is selected by
the Musicians for Life. You are invited to come help us select and play music
for the Life Teen Mass; let your
voice be heard! The main resource for the
Life Teen Masses that we use is Spirit & Song from Oregon Catholic
Press. We also use music from other Catholic Publishers for youth.
Gina Contolini is the youth
leader for the group and she is also on the Youth Musicians’ Advisory Committee.
Chris Loop is our Young Adult leader and he helps coordinate our rehearsals and
meetings. Other members of the Youth Musicians’ Advisory Committee are Fr.
Andrew Thomas, Jason
Kidd (OLL’s Youth Minister), Jerry Wheeler, Judy Contolini, Therese Gustin, and
Tom Carawan.
If you want to lead music at Mass with the Youth Musicians please schedule an
audition with Tom Carawan. Some people play every Sunday; others play less than
every Sunday, but at least once a month. Extra practices help those who are
playing and singing with us for their first year. Contact or Tom Carawan to
schedule an audition.
Musicians for Life Music Plan
Instrumentalist
There is a place for you if you play an instrument.
Practice times vary according to individual
schedules and needs.
Music Preparation Group
Parishioners select all of the music
at Masses. They meet monthly for 2 ˝–3 hours to choose acclamations, psalms,
hymns, and songs. Meetings are on second Tuesdays at 7 PM in the Fireside Room
of the Parish Office Building. One of the goals
in music ministry this year is to recruit parishioners who are not in one of the
music ministry groups for music preparation. Your voice is important both
singing in the Assembly and reflecting on music at Mass.

MUSic advisory
committee
The advisory committee
is composed of volunteers from each area of music ministry. We plan the yearly
calendar and make recommendations for
program development and the music ministry budget.
Children’s Liturgy of
the Word
Musicians (singers,
pianists, guitarists) help with the Children’s Liturgy of the Word at the 9 AM
Mass. They lead the Psalm, Alleluia, and songs.
Music Ministry Opportunities
Summer Pick-up Choir—At
the 11:00 AM Mass we have a Summer Pick-Up Choir. What this means is that you
can come to practice at 10:00 AM in the Parish Hall Carpet Area and sing at Mass
with us. No prior experience necessary! —And the commitment is for that Sunday
only.
LEADERSHIP
Within each music ministry group there is a leadership team or committee that
attends to scheduling details of special events, ongoing preparation and
planning, and social activities.
WHAT DO I DO NOW
You are invited to become a music minister. Your age
and your musical skill add to our musical diversity: ALL ARE WELCOME. The main
requirement is that you are willing to serve in a ministry, attend
rehearsals/meetings, play, and pray.
If you are interested, you may:
1. Talk to one of the members of a group after Mass.
2. Call Tom Carawan at the parish office or send an email. We will schedule some
time to discuss how you might be a part of this ministry.
Our Music Ministry provides:
• Enrichment of the musical parts of the Sunday
Mass, special liturgies, and holy days with Cantor, Choir, and Instrumental
support, focusing on assembly participation.
• Music Leadership for Sacraments such as Weddings
and Funerals
• Music Leadership for Religious Education.
